Marion Joy Langford
I began painting in 2000 studying with Sarah Mumford. Within a year I was off on the first of several week long retreats to the Blue Mountains, with landscape artist, John Wilson. Since then other artists I have studied with include for landscape Warwick Fuller, contemporary with Lyn Hammond and Anne Bourne, and most recently developing my portrait skills with Nafisa Naomi.
My choice of subject is often landscapes, either places I have been or where I long to go. Something in the image is drawing me, often the light, and often to a place of peace and tranquillity, a sense of being home. Other times it may be an expression of a mood I have yet to identify within and yet my soul knows and finds its way to be expressed. Our family camping and bushwalking holidays take us to outback Australia for inspiration to places like Uluru, Kata Juta, the MacDonnell Ranges, the Flinders Ranges, to Darwin and the Northern Territory and within country Victoria and New South Wales. Our most recent visit has been to Western Australia and the Pilbara region.
More recently I have been focussing on portraits and figures. I love the challenge and the beauty of working with this new territory. As someone who also works with people as a Life and Career Coach, I am fascinated by their story. I see portraiture as a wonderful way of capturing an individual’s story in their painting.
